The Parliamentary Secretary for Rights of Persons with Disability and Active Ageing Justyne Caruana, today participated in an event organised by the Malta Down Syndrome Association, which is celebrating its 10 year anniversary since the association was launched.

This activity was held on the occasion of World Down Syndrome Day, which is celebrated on the 21st of March.

The meeting took place in Gozo and the Parliamentary Secretary had the opportunity to discuss various information and ideas with persons with disability and their parents, as well as take part in an question and answer session with those present.

Dr Caruana reiterated the Government’s commitment in this sector and said that there is ongoing work taking place for a home for persons with disability to open within the community this year. The home will provide residential services for persons with different types of disability.

The Parliamentary Secretary also mentioned the project of a life long learning hub for persons with disability in Ghajnsielem, and the 80 jobs, which include back office work and scanning to be created in Gozo for Persons with Disability.

Down’s syndrome, also known as Trisomy 21, is the most common chromosomal defect globally; a condition occurring at a rate of approximately 1 in 700 births.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Health Chris Fearne, said yesterday that in Malta and Gozo an average of 8 babies are born with Down’s syndrome yearly. Over the last 20 year period a total of 166 babies with Down’s syndrome were registered with the Malta Congenital Anomalies Register.
