37,771 students will begin the 2026/27 scholastic year in State schools this week – ranging from kindergarten to secondary level – including 2,754 new students. They will be taught by 8,861 educators.

In Gozo, the Kercem Primary School will open its doors this year, while work on the Zebbug Primary School is set to begin soon, the Government said.

Minister for Education and Sport Byron Camilleri stated that, “each and every one of these 37,771 students deserves a safe and modern school, as well as a teacher who believes in them. That is precisely why this investment is being made. We wish a successful scholastic year to all students, parents, and educators.”

During this scholastic year, 36,457 students will be utilising free school transport: 15,370 from State schools and 21,087 from Church and independent schools.

The Minister said that the service is provided free of charge to every eligible student – from the first year of kindergarten up to Year 11 – who lives more than one kilometre away from their school. The service covers 207 schools. Over €110 million in new and improved schools

It was explained that the Foundation for Tomorrow’s Schools is currently undertaking projects representing an investment of over €110 million, including:

• A hydrotherapy complex for children with disabilities at San Miguel, Pembroke, scheduled for completion by the end of 2026; • Sports facilities, halls, and parking areas at the new schools will be open to the community after school hours; • A new primary school in Naxxar, co-financed by the European Union, opening next year; • A new primary school in Mellie?a, featuring a hall and sports facilities; • Extensive renovation of the St George Primary School in Qormi.

The Minister said that this year, 142 new regular teachers and 45 new supply teachers were recruited. €2 million in works carried out over the summer.
