Data from the National Statistics Office today has shown that in August the seasonally adjusted monthly unemployment rate stood at 3.4%, an increase of 0.9 percentage points on last year year when it stood at 2.5%.

The number of unemployed persons was 11,973, marginally higher than the 11,921 for the previous month.

The NSO noted that the 25 to 74 age group was once again the major contributor to the overall level of unemployment totalling 9,259 or 77.3%. The figure for unemployed youths amounted 2,714 or 22,7%.

The unemployment rate for males stood at 3.5%, and for females 3.3%. The rate for males increased by 0.1 percentage points compared to the previous month. The rate for females decreased by 0.1 percentage points.

The unemployment rate for persons aged 15 to 24 years (youth unemployment rate) reached 9.7%. The rate for those aged between 25 and 74 years stood at 2.9%.
