The Government has announced that after several consultations with constituted bodies and as already announced, the Government revised the charges for the disposal of waste which came into force in October 2009 for Local Councils As from today this tariff also comes into force for private industry and other entities that generate waste. The new tariffs include an increase from €0.91 to € 20 per tonne for waste that enters the engineered landfill, as well as a reduction to € 0.50 per ton for that waste is separated and taken into Sant’Antnin Waste Recycling Plant. Household waste that can go into a Civic Amenity Site (Centres for Bulky Waste) can still be taken to these Centres free of charge. Wasteserv is implementing the controls necessary to commercial entities to stop abuse by this free service.

The Government said that they are conscious of the need for engineered landfill sites to continue for as many years as possible, and therefore to encourage more separation of waste, the fee was increased to to help benefit all those who recycle waste.

This change has already substantially increased the initiatives being undertaken by Local Councils to carry out waste separation in their localities. The Government are in ongoing talks with representatives of the waste collectors to enable them to equip their vehicles with devices that can weigh the waste on site. They said that talks are at an advanced stage.

This measure is another step in the direction built on the principle that the polluter pays. The Government said that the change in fees rewards the effort of those who separate waste because they save money, while also protecting the environment.

This change will also lead to reducing the total amount of waste going into an engineered landfill, which is costing WasteServ € 30 per tonne to be handled in accordance with the obligations of the EU directives and that they are monitored for a period of approximately 30 years. This expenditure comes from the fact that the waste burial holes no longer have refuse simply thrown in with possible the consequence of further damage to the environment. The expenditure necessary to then deal with the waste after the damage was greater. This is happening today where millions are spent on the rehabilitation of Maghtab, among others.
