A few weeks ago an amount of oil flowed down into the Lunzjata valley. It turned out that this oil had been flowing from a sewage pump nearby, after it was damaged by the power system. The Ministry for Gozo has coordinated and and funded, the work which is being carried out as intensively as possible in order to avoid irreparable damage.

This work lasted about a week, with full collaboration of the Department of Civil Protection in Gozo, the department of public cleanliness within the Gozo Ministry, MEPA and other organisations. The Ministry for Gozo also commissioned the technical services of the Alpha Briggs Company.

The work included the collection of oil throughout the valley of one kilometer, cleaning the bottom of a sewage pump in the valley, as well as monitoring for oil to make sure it is prevented from spreading to Xlendi bay.

The Ministry is informed that MEPA is carrying our a scientific study of the case to see what impact this incident has had and how it affected the water, plants and animals. Meanwhile, the Ministry for Gozo condemns the irresponsible behavior of those who caused this pollution while urging people to respect the natural environment, which is the cornerstone of the particular identity of the island.
