Stars and Stripes Malta (SASM) would like to bring to the attention of all US citizens living in Malta and Gozo that, with certain exceptions, they must file their US Income Tax return by June. Tax returns can be filed either manually or electronically. Filing one’s tax return electronically carries certain benefits.

US citizens living in Malta who earned wages/salaries of less than $91,400 (approximately €67,000) and are filing a tax return that covers a 12-month period will not be eligible to pay any taxes, but are still required to fill in the necessary documentation. This does not apply to self-employed people and those who make business/moving expenses or foreign housing deductions.

For the 2009 tax period the limits on Housing Expenses for those living in Malta are $123.29 daily with an annual limit of $45,000.

Stars And Stripes Malta (SASM) has a limited number of copies of the IRS publication “1040 Forms And Instructions For Overseas Filers – 2009” for use by its members. Members wishing to borrow this booklet are to contact SASM on info@StarsAndStripesMalta.com.

Stars And Stripes Malta (SASM) augurs that the Maltese and US governments ratify the dual taxation agreement soon in order to facilitate the lives of the thousands of US citizens living in Malta.

Stars And Stripes Malta (SASM) is a Maltese NGO set up to represent and assists US citizens living in Malta and Gozo, those of Maltese descent living in the United States and anyone who would like to be part of a USA-Malta Friendship and Cultural Group.
