The Leone Philharmonic Society A.D. 1863 has announced the presentation of it’s 3rd edition of the pop series concert – Leone Goes Pop. This open-air concert dedicated to pop music will be presented in Victoria’s main square – Independence Square (it-Tokk), on Sunday the 6th of June 2010, which is the eve of a public holiday, at 9pm.

The Leone Band of Victoria, under the direction of Colin Attard, dared tread where no civic band had ever been before, when it launched the experimental pop concert in 2008. It emerged as a result of the ever increasing popular musical repertoire in the band’s archives, so much that a fully-fledged concert could be compiled and delivered.

This production, as yet unrivalled, was repeated with an even stronger appeal last year, when due to popular demand, a repeat performance was given in summer, in Marsalforn bay. That 2009 edition is still remembered for the premier of The Best of The Tramps – the first band medley of songs by Gozo’s legendary group The Tramps.

This time round, the Leone is going pop again, keeping with the original musical genre. More information about the musical repertoire and guest appearances will be out soon.

Thousands of people have so far attended the first two editions of Leone Goes Pop. The third one, now in the making, looks promising, showing the potential of drawing stronger crowds to the band. Once again a band spokesman said, it should attest that what was born almost 150 years ago, as the first band of Gozo, is even more attractive and valid in this day and age.
