Gozo College Nadur Primary School was awarded the Green Flag Award yesterday, Thursday, the 17th of June 2010. The Green Flag award is an international recognition awarded to eco-schools who promoted an environmental and sustainable developmental education within their schools.

The Eco Schools programme was launched in Malta in 2002 by Nature Trust (Malta), as the Malta representative of FEE. From the six schools in 2002, the programme is now being run in over hundred schools in Malta and Gozo, making it one of the biggest and most successful environmental programmes in the Maltese Islands. The Ekoskola is about empowering students in the running of this programme thus ensuring that the Islands will have more responsible citizens in the future. The aim of Eco-Schools is to raise students’ awareness of sustainable development issues thought classroom study and community action.The Gozo College Nadur Primary EkoSkola Committee formed by the majority of children and also includes members of the staff and the local community, strived day in and day out in promoting environmental and healthy habits for all the school community. In fact, last year, Gozo College Nadur Primary’s incessant green initiatives was rewarded by the Silver Award. Environmental education forms an essential element in both the School Development Plan and the EkoSkola Action Plan itself within the ekoGhawdex noble initiatives. This special day was celebrated today by a Healthy Fruit Party for all the school community.

Later on this year, the Green Flag will be officially presented to Gozo College Nadur Primary and the school children will proudly fly the prestigious Green Flag on their school as an international symbol that their school has reached the international level in environmental education criteria.
