The Gozo Curia has said that COMECE (Commission of the Bishop’s Conferences of the European communities) has appointed Mgr Joe Vella Gauci, as a member of its Secretariat in his capacity as an expert on the matter of religious freedom and international relations.

This appointment was made on the recommendation of the Bishop of Gozo, Mario Grech. Mgr Vella Gauci had been throught a selection process along with other candidates.

Among the tasks associated with this office, there is the monitoring, analysis and contribution to the policies of the European institutions as regards the right of religious freedom.

Mgr Vella Gauci, who between 1996 and 2006 was Archpriest of the Cathedral parish, specialised in studies related to this subject. He will commence the office in October.

The Bishop of Gozo, Mario Grech is the representative of the Maltese Episcopal Commission in COMECE.
