This important development in the regional autonomy of Gozo was reiterated in an inaugural speech held by the President of the Region Dr Samuel Azzopardi. Dr Azzopardi, who is also the Mayor of Victoria stressed the need for the Regional Council to be further strengthened while he reminded those present of regional autonomy achievement Gozo had throughout the years, mentioning also the fiftieth anniversary next year of the Gozo Civic Council.

Dr Azzopardi appealed to those present, namely the Mayors of Gozo who are members of the Regional Council to do their utmost to enhance the council so as not to let history repeat itself.

2. Tarcisio and Maria Portelli recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with Mass celebrated by H.E. Mgr. Nikol Cauchi, Bishop Emeritus for Gozo, at the Gozo Cathedral, followed by dinner at the Kempinski Hotel, San Lawrenz. Their daughter Josephine and her husband Raymond Grech, who came specifically from the United States of America, also celebrated their 25th anniversary.

3. During the annual concert organized recently by the Santa Maria Philarmonic Society of Zebbug Gozo, Mr Carmel Cini formerly of Zebbug now residing in Victoria was awarded with Gieh il-Banda. Mr Cini collaborated with former Zebbug archpriests Mgr. Aluigi Vella and his uncle Mgr. Francesco Mercieca through voluntary work that included the building of the Zebbug parish centre, the organisation of cultural and social events as well as other projects connected with the organisation of the parish feast.

A major event that still remains in the memory of many villagers was an exhibition of artisan and traditional tools and objects that had attracted numerous visitors and interest in the mid-seventies. Mr Cini’s interest and connection with his birthplace continues years after he changed his residence to Victoria.
