In collaboration with the Gozo Culture Office (Ministry for Gozo), the Gozo Creative Theatre Club will be presenting the tragic play Agnes of God by John Pielmeier.
The story of the play is around Sister Agnes, a twenty-one-year-old nun, is accused of murdering an infant she gave birth to in a cloistered convent. Sister Agnes professes no knowledge of the baby’s birth or death, offers no reason for the presence of the body in her room, and, until she is hypnotized, claims to have no recollection of ever conceiving. The psychiatrist assigned to her case meets opposition with the convent’s Mother Superior who must expound the possibilities of miracles while recognising the realities of today’s world, of which she is painfully aware. Agnes is a beautiful but tormented soul whose abusive upbringing has affected her ability to think rationally. All three women explore questions of faith, memory and the meaning of Sainthood. The play has enjoyed a revival among Catholic women’s groups who believe it examines important moral and spiritual issues that Catholic women must face.
The cast features Mariella Cassar as the psychiatrist, Mariella Gannon as the Mother Superior and Julia Camilleri as Agnes. Stage design is by Paul Stellini and the artistic direction is in the hands of George Mizzi, the Gozo Creative Theatre Club’s director.
The Gozo Creative Theatre Club is an established drama group that is mostly known for its innovative, experimental and creative theatrical productions which include The Vagina Monologues, Cindy – the Musical, In Holland Stands a House, Kickass Plays, Confusions, The Good Doctor, Dear Nobody, The Second Coming of Joan of Arc, the Penis Monologues, Teechers, Ashes to Ashes and Trojan Women.
Agnes of God will be staged at the Citadel Centre for Culture and Arts, Citadel, Victoria, Gozo on Saturday, the 19th and Sunday, the 20th of February 2011, from 7pm onwards. Entrance is free. Seating for this performance will be on a first come first served basis.
