Update: The protective shelter at Hagar Qim Temples sustained damage yesterday night as a result of the gale force winds which swept the Islands.

Heritage Malta said that staff were immediately on site and with the help of the Civil Protection Department they stabilised those components that were loosened or torn by the wind Consequently further damage to the shelter was avoided. The operation was carried out in the dark and under difficult weather conditions.

A thorough inspection of the prehistoric structures was conducted this morning when it was confirmed that no damage to the Temples was sustained.

Both Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temples are however being kept closed to the public today until investigations are fully completed.

An update from Heritage Malta said that remedial works are currently being done on the Hagar Qim protective shelter.

In the meantime, verifications have been also carried out at Mnajdra Temples and it is now confirmed that as from tomorrow, the 20th of February, this particular site will be open to the general public. Hagar Qim will remain closed until further notice.
