The Gozo Centre for Art and Crafts recently hosted a group of 50 students coming from the Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary School and Sir Mikiel Ang Refalo Higher Secondary School. The group is currently studying marketing in both respective schools.

The students were welcomed by Mr Attard, Head of the Centre, who delivered an introductory speech with regards to the concepts and principles adopted by the Centre in the perspective of marketing. With a high population of 1247 participants, a substantial percentage attends for courses to enhance their artistic talents. However with the introduction of new courses, an ever increasing number, attend the Centre aspiring towards business and market.

While keeping alive traditional crafts the Centre strives to merge tradition with contemporary. Mr Attard said that the Centre aims for the achievement of a high quality product, which is suitable to be put on market, and able to stand competitiveness. To this regards the workshops are equipped with high standard equipment so as to provide the opportunity to participants to gain skills in the production of quality produce.

Following the talk the students were taken to the workshops for an orientation visit. Referring to his previous talk Mr. Attard pointed out that equipment is indispensable throughout the production process. The Centre made a leap in quality and standard following to the initiative taken by the Ministry for Gozo to extend the Centre.

The extension of the new wing to the already existing Centre was implemented with the allocation of funds through European Structural Funds. Mr Attard gave a short briefing of each course delivered in the respective workshops. He explained how all the interior decorations and minor projects found in the Centre are entirely designed and produced at the Centre. The concept of inclusion is effective in the production of an artefact.

Currently the Centre is commissioned to work on a mural for the Gozo Slaughter-House, measuring 4.5m by 1.5m in ceramics. This project imvolves the participation of adult learners from metal and wood courses and young learners from the Art Jr course. Participants are encouraged to utilise recycled material, making reference to the works in glass which are to be installed in the Centres stairway banister.
