MUMN said it welcomes the news issued by the University of Malta that the numerous clausus for the courses leading to a degree and diploma in nursing and midwifery has been removed.
MUMN went on to say the decision to introduce the concept of numerous clausus was introduced five years ago and MUMN had to resort to several industrial actions every year for such numerous clausus to be removed. Last year MUMN organised a marketing campaign to attract young people into the nursing and midwifery professions. MUMN said it proposed to the office of the Prime Minister to set up a task force to analyze the situation in the University to seek a solution for the removal of the numerous clausus.
Such news from the University of Malta is welcomed by every nurse and midwife serving in the Maltese islands since such numerous clauses brought great hardships and burnouts for every nurse and midwife serving in all Government hospitals as the decision to introduce the numerous clausus was one of the main contributors which brought the shortage of nurses and midwives in the health service. As a result of the numerous clauses, youths were being refused to join the nursing and midwifery courses which resulted for the health division to employ foreign nurses from Pakistan, Bulgaria and other foreign countries to address the shortage of nurses, the MUMN said.
MUMN concluded by saying it is pleased that finally the University of Malta has recognised the shortage of the nurses and midwives in the Maltese islands. It is not yet clear for MUMN if the mature students would be accepted to start these courses since in this decision there was no indication if ALL mature students eligible to enter such courses would not find the University doors closed when applying to a nursing/midwifery courses later on this year. There was no reference on this decision and so MUMN said it is requesting clarifications.
