On the occasion of World Down Syndrome Day, yesterday, the 21st of March, a delegation of Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party comprising Chairperson Michael Briguglio and Spokesperson for Disability Issues Claire Azzopardi Lane, met the Down Syndrome Association.
Claire Azzopardi Lane, AD spokesperson for Disability Issues, said, “AD supports increased social inclusion and social rights for persons with down syndrome. Some policies in this regard include quality secondary inclusive education which truly caters for the needs and aspirations of such persons, and the need for life long learning opportunties. As regards the latter, once persons with down syndrome finish compulsory education, many end up with lack of access to social, educational and employment opportunities. AD calls for more support towards such persons, not only from government agencies, but also from voluntary organisations and private companies dealing with sports, culture, and other aspects of community life.”
Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson, added, “It was very important for the Green Party to hear the proposals of the Down Syndrome Association. As is the case with other persons with disability, AD believes that the current disability pension, which amounts to 55 per cent of the minimum wage, does not suffice to meet the needs of such persons. Besides, AD asks for increased effort from authorities to ensure that employment legislation is properly enforced, thus ensuring the right to employment and fair wages for such persons. Above all, AD believes that persons with down syndrome should have full access to the social, economic and cultural spheres of everyday life.”
