The Aurora Opera House, Victoria, Gozo, joined the Earth Hour 2011, initiative with a general lights-out of its exterior illumination on Saturday, the 26th of March 2011, between 8.30pm and 9.30pm.
In an effort to go beyond the hour as is being emphasised this year, the theatre is in the process of switching to the complete use of energy saving lighting equipment, including stage lights. Its long-term infrastructural plan also sees the continuation of sensory lighting and water fixtures which help reduce excessive consumption and waste of water and electricity to which large public places are prone to.
The project involves the study and installation of photovoltaic panels which could generate the total demand of power supply needed by the theatre. The Aurora theatre said that such a project, should make it the first carbon-neutral theatre in Malta as far as electricity is concerned.
