The extensive career of ceramist Paul Haber is being celebrated in Bank of Valletta’s 20th Retrospective Exhibition, which is being held at the Bank’s Head Office in St Venera between the 9th of June and the 21st of July 2011.

Born in 1940 in Xewkija, Gozo, Paul Haber, the eldest of twelve siblings started his education at The Gozo Seminary where art did not feature in the school curriculum, but this did not deter him from pursuing an artistic career. Inspired by his father’s love of art and nature, he proceeded in taking his first course by correspondence in 1958. Following his secondary education, he proceeded to cross over to Malta to attend the Malta School of Art, taking sculpture as his preferred field of study under master Gorg Borg.

Paul left Malta in 1962 to study art and later specialised in ceramics in three different colleges in the UK and another two in Italy. Early in his artistic career Paul adopted a contemporary style of his own.

His versatility and love of clay as his chosen medium is manifested in the myriad shapes, textures and colours which capture moods and transmit vibes that whether one is able to unravel or not, is left in awe of the enigmatic forces conveyed. Haber never ceases to surprise with each consecutive exhibition and though retrospective, this show will also feature some of his latest works which have not been exhibited before.

The exhibition is being inaugurated on the 9th of June 2011 by H.E. Dr George Abela, President of Malta and will be open to the General public from the 10th of June until the 21st ofJuly 2011.

Paul Haber’s retrospective exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue including a biographical synopsis and reproductions in colour of all the exhibits in the exhibition.
