Earlier this morning, the Operations’ Centre of the Armed Forces of Malta at Luqa Barracks was informed by the Victoria Police in Gozo that in the precincts of ‘Tax-Xwejni’, under the Tal-Gordan lighthouse area there were three tied up dogs floating on the sea’s surface.
The AFM Maritime Squadron’s Bremse-class patrol boat P-32, which has recently been permanently stationed in Gozo with an all-Gozitan crew, was immediately detailed to proceed to the area to locate the tied up dogs which had been sighted and recover them. The patrolboat could not make much headway inshore due to the inclement swell prevailing in the area at the time.
By late afternoon, when the sea swell conditions improved, the P-32 crew managed to recover the three dead Pharaoh Hounds (Klieb tal-Fenek ) which had been tied up together and ditched at sea. They were later landed at Mgarr Harbour by the AFM crewmen where Police and Animal Welfare officers were waiting.
The photograph, which was taken by Crew of the P-32/ AFM Maritime Squadron, shows the tragic scene of the three dead and tied up Pharaoh Hound dogs on P-32’s deck.

I wonder what Mrs.Betty have to say this time then, any comment , it doesn’t look good doesn’t it., the picture speak for itself……….sickening to say the least.
What is going through a persons mind? To do this is to any animal is beyond belief. I hope the person or persons who did this can sleep at night. You obviously have no respect not only for anyone but even yourself! SHAME
(Melbourne, Australia)
As the proud owner of 4 Klieb Tal Fenek (Pharaoh Hounds) here in the UK I am horrified to hear of this happening to these beautiful creatures. You say they are your National Dog but you don’t seem to have any pride or respect for them. This is not the first time this has happened on your islands. Jan 2007 3 were found hung in a farmer’s yard and sometime later two were found floating in a bay tied together, much the same as this disgusting incident. I hope whoever carried out this deed is caught and dealt with. This article is now bounding around the world on the social networks and everyone who reads it is upset by this incident.
“The Minister for Gozo is responsible for the specific needs of Gozo, to improve and promote the economic, social and cultural development of Gozo, whilst protecting the environment and the cultural identity of the island. ”
Where is Mrs Govanna Debono when you need her ?
Say nothing…See nothing …Hear Nothing.
Petrified of Melbourne.
We have been reading a lot lately about such cruelty to animals on Gozo, I wonder if Mrs, Berry has any answers now and all the other defenders. As the saying goes: THE BALL IS IN YOUR COURT.
Greetings from Sydney, oh yes folks news travels fast with these sort of images and will only make matters worse for the Maltese and the Calypso islands.
This place is making me sick I used to love Malta but there is no way i would set foot there again, and I have asked my wife to contact the dog world and our dogs papers here to print warnings about people allowing puppies to be exported there.
As Vice President of The Pharaoh Hound club in the UK I am bewildered by this act of cruelty,,if you no longer want your dog there must be an organisation you can take it to…This is your National Dog you should be proud. The owners on Malta just don’t seem to care.. it is a good job we ‘rescued’ some before they are wiped out by you lot…
Gordon, you can lock yourself up at home then because there is no place on Earth which you can set foot on. These are horrendous acts but an act of one person in 380 thousand is not a reflection of all. I feel so ashamed of these acts but sick people emerge from and amongst any people. We live in a beautiful world and the Maltese Islands excel in natural beauty and the people especially Gozitans are well-known for their hospitality, friendliness and love for animals. This person must be very sick like any serial killer, rapist etc. We pray that he gets caught so these atrocious deeds can be halted.
Gordon you are not fair here. As a Gozitan I can assure you that you always get the rotten apple that makes more noise than the rest.
I assure you that the very vast majority love their pets .
Well done for your comment Anthoney Zammit
You really need phsyciatric help, there is no way you could be normal after committing such a cruel act. You need to be locked up where you will not be able to harm anyone but yourself. I will GLADLY supply the rope that you may have a taste of your own medicine. People like you should be exterminated.
There is no space for new strays in any animal shelter in Malta. I fear certain people are at odd ends with what to do with unwanted animals, all animal shelters are full, some do not have the money to keep the shelters going, isn’t it about time the Government helped out these shelters by funding them?
Are we “CATHOLICS” just for show, are these creatures not God’s creatures too? Are we so backward that we look on animals as dirt and useless pests AND AN EXTRA USELESS BURDEN ON OUR HARD EARNED WAGES? SO WE TIE THEM UP AND THROW THEM IN THE SEA TO DIE.
We have many animal lovers in Malta who have been lucky enough to experience first hand what unconditional love means, it’s a pity not everyone is ready to open their home to a pet – You don’t know what you are missing.
GOD BLESS ALL ANIMAL LOVERS and keep up the good work.
Re Mark g’day fair play to you defending Gozo same for messrs.Betty and co., however although i understand your point saying that not all Gozitans are mean as this bastard in question, however it only takes one rotten apple to bagger it up for the rest of you guys.i read the very same itme in one of our newsmedia here in Melbourne and i feel ashamed to be called a Maltese/ Gozitan as this sure has messed up the liitle calypso island altogether. No matter how much the maltese politician try to be neutral and make political speaches, but news like this erases any good coming out of Malta for a long time, so much so although here in aussie these things do happen also, but at this moment in time Malta is in the news what with Libya and all – this takes the cherrie on the cake, so i am afraind there is a TRAITOR AMONGST YOU GUYS breathing the same air as you which must be found and eliminated permanently for Gozo’s sake or Malta which ever is the culprit. The rest is up to the local government bodies incharge and the Police in particualr to catch the Bastard responsible. The PICTURE SPEAKS FOR ITSELF!
Mark is right. NOT all Gozitans and all Maltese are cruel to animals.
Besides ths article is 100% wrong about the P-32 with ALL GOZITAN CREW PERMANENTLY STATIONED in Gozo. It was stationed here for 3 days ONLY. That’s the shame of PN, which first spent the money for the offices in Mgarr and for the inaugurations and parties, and after the 3 days of the Notte Gozitana…the P-32 is back to Malta…PERMANENTLY.
Thanks PN for caring for the Gozitans.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQ_sOtyXo38 this clip is said to be filmed also in marsalforn. Shame on these pesons!!!
Since moving to Gozo from the UK 9 months ago, I have heard of several acts of cruely to animals here but none as horrific as this. Having said that, I used to hear of plenty of acts of cruelty to animals in the UK. Gordon is right, it happens everywhere. Undoubtably the person who did this has no empathy, compassion or decency and is obviously sick but the question I am asking is, would they have done this terrible thing if they had somewhere they could have taken their unwanted animals?
i know this happens all over the world, it happens here in the UK quite often but here there is the RSPCA, SPCA, Dogs Trust and PDSA and a few others. These are places where you can take your unwanted pets were they can be rehomed from.
Europe is a dog loving area and especially the UK. Malta is a small island so these things come to the attention of people more easily, as Sandra says these are gods creature’s – The church blesses the animals why don’t they say more about this, they seem to have more say than the Government. Malta needs more animal welfare and more education on animal keeping and also stronger penalties
Anthony that was the first thing i noticed when i visited Gozo the people were friendly kind i love the place and the people, i have been breeding dogs here in Scotland for over 25 years and i know where and who has everyone of our dogs my wife made sure of that, i think if i caught this person i would end up the wild animal and tear them to bits, some one must know who owns these dogs they were bitches so they have had pups so some one has them they are as bad as the person doing the cruelty by not telling the police.
YET ANOTHER CASE OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS. THIS MUST STOP, MR GONZI SHOULD BE INFORMED OF THIS AND DO SOMETHING NOT BRUSHING IT ASIDE, WHAT IS MRS DEBONO DOING ABOUT THIS?
I WISH ALL THE PEOPLE OF MALTA AND GOZO WILL READ THIS -PEOPLE PLEASE MARCH TO STOP THIS CRUELTY
@ Miriam I guess the Maltese authorities and the Gozo ministers already know but they are probably toooooo Busy working on other matters for the nation and animals are at the bottom of their agenda as USUAL on the tiny islands that we hear so much about, I think we all know different hence no holidays in Malta for us this year.

THIS IS ABSOLUTLY DISGUSTING, I’M A PHAROH HOUND OWNER IN THE UK AND WOULD NEVER DREAM OF KILLING MY DOGS, THE PERSON WHO HAS DONE THIS SHOULD BE JAILED OR TIED UP AND THROWN IN THE SEA TO ROT.
I HOPE THEY CATCH THE OFFENDER AND TAKE EVERY DOG THEY OWN AWAY FROM THEM FOR THE POOR DOGS SAFETY AND RE-HOMED TO GENUINE DOG LOVING PEOPLE.
ITS SUCH A SHAME THE FLIGHTS TO THE UK FROM MALTA ARE EXPENSIVE AS I FOR ONE WOULD RE-HOME ONE. SHAME ON YOU WHOEVER DID THIS AND YOU HAPPEN TO READ THIS COMMENT.
We have read a lot of negative and positive comments in these recent articles, as an NGA> national graphical member and ex-Druk en Papier newsprint in the Netherlands and New Zealand I take my hat off to the* Gozo News* for printing and reporting both sides to the story above, where as before we also read of the positive side to Gozo, but now other items are emerging which are vital to Gozo if they are to survive in the tourist industry and employment.
As I just read there is a traitor still loose on Gozo which must be located and impose a long prison sentence for the sake of the Gozitans, I say Gozitans as the finger is yet again pointed at Gozo and another recent case to their sister island of Malta.
This is a terrible case of mistreatment to animals which could have been rehoused in a loving home ,. however at this moment in time things do not look very bright for the islands as whole and your minister should get off that high pedestal and get their finger out to sort out your priorities and get the house in order before the good name of Gozo and Malta returns back to normal. I believe other tourists have taken other snap shots of the three dogs whilst the AFM were in operation at the time.
Good luck anyway Gozo you people deserve to be put on the map with the rest of Europe as a country that cares for its environement for many years to come.
It is unfortunate that these incidents occur; it is more unfortunate that the same handful of persons who are capable of such disrespect and cruelty are characterzed by like narrow minded persons as represting a population or culture. No country has a monopoly of people capable of such acts; so to the few who generalize, please educate yourselves; you are almost as ignorant as the low lifes who perpatrate such cruelty.(and certainly biggoted)
What can Govanna do? You make me laugh. Build more animal shelters? Then you will complain about your taxes? A person who does not want his dogs would normally drive away, maybe even cross the fliegu and drop the dogs there and leave them to their destiny. This person wanted to kill them and kill them in that fashion. (Period) The Minister could urge a smart detective and puts him on the case until it is solved even if it takes months or years. This is done with important cases. I believe that this case in important because it goes against all the Maltese People. I am sure if one detective is put on the case, day and night, he will be able to sniff out the murderer.
@ MrZammit.
“The greatness of a country can be judged by the way its animals are treated” M.Ghandi
The Minister for Gozo can do a lot about this ongoing cruel and horrible pets issue, without wasting too much of your precious hard earned money. Educating you and your stubborn fellow Maltese and Gozitans. A TV and media blitz can do miracles, and would not cost much.
Gozoroo
@ Borg
Agree with you 100% that education is the way to civilize maybe me and fellow Maltese and Gozitans. This is being done at the right institutions, at the schools for the young! The adults, as you said need TV and Media Blitz but in that case you better address Peppi than the Minister. The minister is doing her job in an exceptional manner to endorse Culture in Gozo. Stating the contrarily would mean that it is you who are the stubborn person. These sick people do not watch Education 22 Channel or any breakfast programs. They only watch the news and Xarabank because they are the two shows which represent life. Other discussion shows might be watched but I doubt it especially religious shows. These are only a handful and the only way to stop them is to spot them and hurl them out off society.
@Mr.Zammit and Mr. Borg;
A countries greatness is measured by how the country treats it’s animals? I think you will find most developed countries have laws regarding ethical treatment of animals; Even undeveloped cultures have respect for all God’s creatures in they’re doctrine. This has nothing to do with what TV programs people watch-media is accessible to all in formats from cell phone to pc’s. It’s the odd citizen that commits these acts, and as I stated previously, every country, (United States football player Michael Vick for example) and scores of examples in “great” countries exist. All those who paint a culture or population with the same brush as these ignorant abusers of animals are just as ignorant. And again, BIGOTTED
“It`s the odd citizen that commits these atrocious acts” Try to explain that to your bird hunters, I suggest you wear a BP vest, just a precaution. They shoot anything that moves and flies. There is not one day without reading about lost, killed, maimed and butchered pets on your newspapers. You`ll find the ODD uneducated citizen on every corner of the planet. But in Malta you have a bucket full of ODD and EVEN citizens that will never learn.
