A 17-year old Kazakhistan national on holiday in Malta was urgently evacuated to Mater Dei Hospital earlier this afternoon from Comino, after he sustained a back injury and nose bleed following a dive into the sea off Cominotto islet.
Injured Yerbarys Yessimbekov was stabilised and later conveyed by a Gozo based Bremse-class patrolboat, P-32, of the Armed Forces of Malta’s Maritime Squadron. He was landed at Cirkewwa quay to an awaiting ambulance, and immediately taken to hospital for treatment.
Cliff jumping, probably.
While this extreme sport does offer adrenalyn and thrill, it must be said nonetheless that the bigger the risk, the bigger safety precautions must be taken with the area, namely:
(1) Familiarity with the area: check for sea depth, what sea bottom is made up of (rock or sand), and existance of undersea currents.
(2) Increase in jumping height must be made gradually. If you decide in taking on a 20m dive when your previous high was 5m….. well that’s plain stupid, at best.
