The Leone Philharmonic Society of Victoria, has announced that it is to commence major infrastructural works on the roof of the Aurora Opera House, through funds from the Eco-Gozo scheme launched by the Ministry for Gozo.

The Theatre said “that roofing made of asbestos cement corrugated sheets will be replaced with prepainted galvanised insulated corrugated sheets. This ambitious project conforms with the Eco-Gozo strategy, which among other targets, aims to eliminate any kind of asbestos from Gozo.”

The theatre went on to say that “the challenge behind this project is not only financial, which, in the context of a voluntary-run theatre and society is already one mammoth thing, but also in the fact that this is one of the largest roofs of its kind. During the replacement process, it will expose a 1,600 seat opera house, with priceless designs and décor by Chev Emvin Cremona.”

This project is expected to start immediately after the Santa Marija festivities and will be completed within a month. The Aurora Opera House roof project will be completed for the opening night of the 2011-2012 theatre season with the opera Tosca on October the15th 2011.

Opera tickets are now being sold at €70, €60 and €45 from the Aurora Box Office, with a 10% discount on tickets purchased before August 22nd 2011.
