The Federation for Hunting & Conservation – Malta (FKNK) said that it has sent a letter to the Prime Minister, Dr Lawrence Gonzi.
FKNK said that the gist of the letter states, “What your administration seems to be ignoring, whether knowingly or not, is the fact that this state of affairs, where persons’ minds are seen to be toyed with by lack of standardisation and direction, is seriously affecting hunters’ and trappers’ very lives and is causing serious devastating consequences on these persons, your people, on their minds and their family values.”
FKNK said that “following a string of events in recent times that saw a marked increase in psychiatric disorders within its members, the FKNK is seriously concerned that the lack of clear decisions by Government with regard to the live-capture of birds, which same species of birds can be legally shot, has further increased the problem.”
“Thousands of members have spent thousands of Euros and put in hard work since last February, when these trappers had paid their trapping licenses for this year, only now to hear that Government has seen fit to cancel the trapping of turtle dove and quail and has not yet decided about the opening of the trapping season of song thrush and golden plover. This has shattered trappers’ long awaited legal expectations besides their passions and dreams,” FKNK said.
The FKNK went on to say it “is the only entity that has the hunters and trappers best interest at heart, and therefore appealed to Dr. Gonzi to use the tools it has supplied for the correct application of a derogation to permit trapping for huntable species, and furthermore to also put in place another derogation to permit live-finch capturing, again by application of the relative documents it has also supplied.”
The statement conlcluded by saying, “in the interest of Maltese trappers” the FKNK said it “called on Dr. Gonzi’s better judgement in making a decision that is not only moulded on science and law but also on the human element.”
Two points need to be made here. Firstly if the Government knew that they were going to cancel trapping of turtle dove and quail which they obviously did, why did they issue licences for that purpose? Secondly I find it worrying that the FKNK itself is admitting in the press that they have noticed a marked increase in psychiatric disorders within its members. Shouldn’t these members be reported to the police and have their guns removed for the safety of themselves and the public?
Mr Tyrell please dont continue with your arrogance. You are a guest over here so dont overstep your limits of decency if you only knew what they are. I would suggest to you that you take care of your own country, while WE take care of OUR country. If you dont like it …. the doors are wide open for you to get out of Malta. remember that the Foreign Interference Act enacted by a labour government is still in force.
George I wasn’t the one who raised the issue of people with psychiatric disorders running around the country with guns. That matter was raised by your own federation as is clearly stated in the article above. If the FKNK have engaged their mouths before putting their brains in gear then you can hardly blame others for picking up on it can you?

If you think you are, then you have a problem.
Why would you think that Peter? Did the FKNK or did they not raise this matter themselves? If you have a problem then it should be with them rather than me but personally I think they did the right thing by bringing the matter to the attention of the public. Perhaps you feel they should have remained silent. Perhaps you think that it is okay for people with psychiatric disorders to be in possession of guns.
