The Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Directorate within the Ministry of Health, the Elderly and Community Care participated in Freshers’ Week, both on the main campus at University and at the Junior College. The Directorate aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles to the young people embarking on such a significant phase of their lives. Healthier lifestyle choices at this stage would augur physical and emotional wellbeing resulting in better academic outcomes and life satisfaction.
The Directorate focused very much on promoting new ideas for physical activity among students, aiming to introduce students to the possibility of being physically active and encouraging use of facilities and other opportunities that are available on both campuses. The activity sessions organised at the University Sports Hall included Fitness session toning, Boxing, Salsa class and Cardio Fitness. Different instructors were engaged to hold the sessions aimed at enticing students with different interests to attend.
The students were offered the possibility to join the Weight Management Classes offered by the Directorate. Other areas of interest were food labelling and salt, particularly to take home to their families. Information was also available on healthy eating, tobacco and sexual health.
The Directorate’s presence at University and Junior College provided a learning opportunity for students in adopting healthy lifestyles at the start of their higher studies which will encourage them to view health as a resource for living within a health promoting environment.
