“I have been asking my local council for the years to fix a loose drain cover outside the front door and below my bedroom window for three years and am still waiting for action from them, why do we have to complain till we are blue in the face to get simple things done?
Below is the transcript of my latest e-mail to them, as you can tell, the time for diplomacy has long gone, and I am getting rather cheesed off with them.”

Maybe it could be 3rd time lucky for me, as it is 3 years since I first asked for this drain cover to be welded down.
In the last communication I had from the guy responsible he said “I am very busy, I will come soon.” That must be nearly 1 year ago, WOW, I never realised their was so much welding to be done in Xewkija? Their are 525600 minutes in a year, and he cannot find 5 of those minutes to effect this simple repair, not only will he get me off his case, he should be pleased that he has made one of his electorate happy.
On a similar matter, do our elected councillors intend to lobby Malta transport for financial help to get repairs carried out to the roads through Xewkija for damage done by the diverted traffic from the main road reconstruction? Malta transport say, “ah, we are only responsible for main roads, local councils are responsible for village roads.” The fact is that before the diversions, the roads were not too bad, they were built in the days of horse and carts and not for the volume of heavy traffic that we get now.”

Perhaps you got to wait much longer because Xewkija`s local council`s election is on March 2013 .Write on the local newspapers .I don`t blame you for being angry .That must be a joke .Don`t give up ,it`s the council that should be ashamed and not you
@cikku l-poplu, it is beyond a joke and embarrassing apologising to visitors for the state of the roads, apologising to guests for not being able to get a good nights sleep due to this dam drain rattling,
@ Mick Are you serious?? How would you feel if you are on holidays and something stupid like this happens to you as well???
We all ought to learn that when something is wrong we got to fix it and we don`t need to splash it all over .So what Mr Hollis did was right .He did all he could to have an amicable solution but as he was facing a brick wall he had to show how he was being treated.
I fully agree with him because this way we normal citizens will be heard by all those in high places
part of the cover has now collapsed, it is only a matter of time until some unsuspecting person trips and breaks an ankle or leg, and when they do i will supply them with all the e-mails between myself and the council going back three years where i pointed out what could possibly happen, and i hope that the unfortunate person sue’s the ass off the council for damages..
thats the last straw, i am fed up of being woken at 5am every morning by the sound of trucks thundering past my house, driving over this dam loose drain cover, ploughing through the numerous pot holes, what do i have to do to get a decent nights sleep ?
come on, fix the drain cover, resurface the road properly, not just fill the pot holes which re-appear after every bit of rain,
my next course of action ! copy and paste the whole of this article and send it to the press..
4 men patching holes in the road, well, 1 man and 3 supervisors, not 1 of them paid any attention to the missing grid in the drain cover, ah i remember, its not their job,
Transport Malta has been ordered to pay almost €100,000 in damages to a man who suffered head injuries in a road accident in Mdina Road in December 2007. The court deemed the accident was caused by the poor state of the road.
the more people that do this, the sooner we will get good, safe roads, god help the authorities if we get those ” no win no fee” lawyers that other eu countries have.

Serve council a registerd letter,outlining the first time you brought this issue to their attention,complete with date,follow up to the most recent corrispondence to date.Inform them you are now putting them on notice,in writing, that if these required repairs are not completed within 60 calendar days,you will contract the repair to a local welder,and deduct the cost incurred by deducting it from your yearly tax bill.
Make sure the money you hold back be put in trust in the hands of your lawyer,if they push you to submit the full amount, dispute it through the courts,I can almost guarantee you a win in this scenerio.
They have a clear mandate of accountability within a reasonable period of time (3 years is NOT a reasonable time period ) toward ALL tax payers,this will effectively put them on the spot and in public view of accountability, or lack off!
( Accountability ) the people that work for the Gozo government in Qala decided to be
nice to the people and give them the opportunity to apply for having fresh water into
their homes ,this happened 63 years ago. They started digging a trench from Hondoq
and of course in front of every house,this has to be 3-4 ft.deep and never put any cover to walk safely over it ! and to get in and out of the garage,the owner has to shovel the
soil that was dug out ,dumping it inside so,the following morning he will drive over it
again and that how they used to create work,and this goes on for months &months!!!!!
@cikku l-poplu, well the election is just around the corner and the drain has not been repaired, i can not wait for the councillors to come knocking on my door canvasing for votes, hopefully he will trip and break his ankle in the loose cover, its a miracle it hasn’t happened to a Innocent pedestrian already
I’m almost a year into my new life as a Gozitan “immigrant” and very pleased that I came here. However, this story is a typical example of what I’ve experienced from pretty much the day I arrived. The people are lovely, but almost without exception NOBODY takes responsibility for anything. I wonder if it’s the availabilty of “confession” that removes the need for people to consider the consequences of their inaction.
