The GRTU has written on behalf of shop owners to the Minister of Finance, Tonio Fenech on an issue that arose during a GRTU meeting held the last week.

“Many of those present at the meeting requested the intervention of the GRTU regarding public holidays that fall over a weekend and where shop owners wish to open, will not be forced to pay 700 euros to do so,” the GRTU said.

The GRTU said that they made it clear that this question must not relate to the Sunday Trading issue and and that those who wish to open their businesses on these days should be able to do so without having to pay extra costs.

“The main reason is that the Friday and Saturday are the two most important trading days for small businesses in these times of economic challenges both locally and across Europe.” GRTU said.

The GRTU has said that the days affected in 2012 are:

Friday 10 February

Saturday 31 March

Thursday 7 June

Friday 29 June

Saturday 8 September

Friday 21 September.
