Two Gozitan Mayors, Noel Formosa of San Lawrenz and Carmelo Saliba of Zebbug, both of the Nationalist Party, have said that they will not contest the local council elections that are taking place next month.
The Mayors had sent letters to the PN General Secretary, Paul Borg Olivier, stating that the decision had been made due to the pending court proceedings against them.
Carmelo Saliba, who has two court cases pending against him, one of which concerns the alleged misuse of the council’s laptop for personal use and the other, Mr Saliba said, relates to “agricultural work in a field, which MEPA considers as illegal dumping.”
Noel Formosa said that the difficult decision had been made following allegations against him. He also said that that he hoped that it was to be only a temporary break from public life, once his innocence had been proved by the court.
The PN General Secretary, Paul Borg Oliver, accepted both decisions.
