Persons registered as employed on a full-time basis in November 2011 increased by 1.6 per cent when compared to the corresponding month in 2010.

Administrative data provided by the Employment and Training Corporation indicate that over a period of one year, the gainfully occupied population increased by 2,357 to 149,952 while the registered unemployed decreased by 63 persons or 0.9 per cent.

Full-time employment in November 2011 went up by 1.6 per cent, with the highest increase recorded within the Health and Social Work sector (+7.5 per cent). The sub-sector which recorded the highest increase in employment was Land Transport (+19.5 per cent). During the period under review, Real Estate, Renting and Business Activities also recorded an increase in employment of 4.4 per cent. On the other hand, employment in Construction decreased by 110 persons or 0.9 per cent when compared to the corresponding month in 2010. Supporting and Auxiliary Transport Activities (including activities of travel agencies) recorded the largest sub-sector decrease in employment with a drop of 5.1 per cent.

Full-time employment within the private sector during the period under review increased by 1.7 per cent, or 1,837 persons, when compared to November 2010. The highest increases were recorded within the Real Estate, Renting and Business Activities (+769 persons) and the Other Community, Social and Personal Service activities (+419 persons).

During this same period, full-time employment within the public sector rose by 1.3 per cent or 520 persons, with the highest increase being recorded in Health and Social Work (+8.8 per cent). Public sector employment within Construction declined by 134 persons when compared to November 2010.

During the month under review, female full-time employment stood at 51,061, an increase of 4.5 per cent or 2,182 persons when compared to the corresponding month in 2010. The economic activity which recorded the highest increase in female employment was the Health and Social Work sector (+13.4 per cent). During the period under review, the number of men working on full-time basis edged up by 0.2 per cent, with the highest increase being recorded in the Other Community, Social and Personal Service Activities (+6 per cent).

When compared to November 2010, total part-time employment went up by 5.8 per cent, reaching 53,609. Part-time employment within the Hotels and Restaurants Sector rose by 11.8 per cent or 1,017 persons when compared to the corresponding month in 2010. This was followed by an additional 11.1 per cent increase in employment in Real Estate, Renting and Business Activities during the same period.

The number of part-timers who also held a full-time job increased by 4.3 per cent when compared to November 2010. The highest fraction of part-timers who fell within this category were males – 68.7 per cent, in spite of the number of women holding both a part-time and a full-time job increased by 7.5 per cent.

The number of persons with a part-time as a main job increased by 7 per cent, with the majority, or 58.6 per cent, being females.
