Gozo Channel Company has announced that it will be offering free return crossings between Gozo and Malta for foot passengers from midnight on Saturday, 19 May, to midnight on Sunday, 20 May. This is expected to attract more Maltese visitors and thus contribute towards the success of the sixth edition of Lejlet Lapsi Notte Gozitana, organised by the Ministry for Gozo. This offer does not apply for vehicles.

On Friday, the 18th of May, at 9.00 p.m. Soundtracks Spectacular is being held on St Francis Square, Victoria. Foot and bus tours are being held on 19 and 20 May at 10.00am. Pre-booking is necessary to secure a place on 2215-6700 or info@gozoculture.com.

On Saturday, the 19th of May the Villa Rundle amphitheatre will host a Déjà-vu show, of TV fame, at 10.30 a.m. Several parts of Victoria will be a hive of activity from 8.00 p.m. Villa Rundle Alive will host animation areas for children with cartoon characters, face painters, balloon modellers and puppet shows and dance shows from 8.30 p.m. onwards.

There will be street animation along Republic Street from 9.00 p.m. At St George’s Square, the evening continues with the Divine Sinners Band at 9.15, Spiru Sillato and The Tramps’ Band at 11.30 p.m. and Spectrum Band at 1.00 a.m.

At Independence Square at 9.00 p.m. violinists Jean Noel and Pierre Louis Attard and Mro Colin Attard at the piano are performing a piano and strings concert. The musical temperament changes to jazz at 10.00 p.m. with a performance by Maltese artist Domenic Galea on the grand piano, followed by Brass Delights, directed by Jason Camilleri, at 11.00. The evening continues with Pjazza Chillout, piano and jazz, co-ordinated by Mro Mark Gauci at midnight.

Victoria’s narrow streets and alleys, il-Borgo and il-Mandragg, will take on a new look with a historical re-enactment of the Grand Master accompanied by the Knights of St John put on by the Xaghra Historical Re-enactment Group at 9.00 p.m. Ta’ Verna Folk Band are performing popular and traditional music in P. Akkursju Xerri Square at 9.30pm. and Tal-Fuklar Folk Band will give a similar performance in Narrow Street at 10.00pm.

Entertainment on Cathedral Square starts at 9.00 p.m. with dancing, singing, music and theatre by The Powerhouse under the direction of Melanie Zammit. Highlights from the Brazilian extravaganza Rio, presented by the Yada Dance Company under the direction of Felix Busuttil, starts at 10.00pm. At 11.00pm. Pjazza ta’ Kulturi starts, a spectacular concert by Osteria dei Pensieri, an Italian acoustic-folk band, in collaboration with the local band Hamam.

On Sunday, the 20th of May from 9.00am to 8.00pm Villa Rundle Gardens will be a riot of colourful costumes with Gozitan folk groups, traditional games and other activities that will bring the garden, which was reopened to the public in recent days, back to life. The new Amphitheatre in the gardens is the venue at 10.00am of a musical, Ghawdex u Grajjietu by Gozo Church school students. Vintage vehicles will be on display from 10.00 a.m. in the new service road adjacent to the new boys’ and girls’ secondary school.

The programme prepared for this year’s edition of Lejlet Lapsi Notte Gozitana draws to a close with Stella and Leone, a musical based on the novel by Gozitan poetess Mary Meilaq. This is being presented by the Gozo Theatre Club under the direction of George Mizzi at Villa Rundle Gardens at 8.00pm.

Apart from operating the regular service up to 11.00pm, the public transport company Arriva is operating special services to all villages and to the Mgarr ferry terminal at midnight on Friday, the 18th of May; and at 12.30 and 2am on Sunday, the 20th of May.
