Winter Moods are to feature in the 5th edition of Leone Goes Pop concert, produced by Gozo’s Leone band on Saturday, the 9th of June.
The 5th edition of the pop/rock concert is coinciding with the opening of the Leone band’s 150th anniversary celebrations, which kick off this year and are due to concluded in 2013.
The Leone Band ventured into the pop genre in the early 90’s, with modern music slipped into the concerts here and there. It was in 2008 when the concept of a full pop-concert was launched, which, the band said “was well recieved by audiences. What started as a concert in Gozo’s popular it-Tokk evolved into a concept of its own kind which was successfully transferred time and time again to Marsalforn Bay and to Valletta’s Presidential Palace as part of the Notte Bianca, amongst other venues.”
The band said that “the first performance will be on Saturday, June the 9th, a long weekend on which Gozo is set to be a favourite destination. A repeat performance, which is generally turned into a philanthropic event for a good cause, is scheduled for Tuesday, July the 24th at Marsalforn bay.” This year, the organisers said that “they hope to increase the already large audiences for these events.”
The first four editions of Leone Goes Pop, contained many different and exciting surprises, from mock-strip tease, to dancing musicians, from hydraulic and rooftop fireworks to the berthing of a real-life boat with dancing sailors aboard.
This fifth edition will present an array of pop medleys with a tinge of rock to which the audience, seated or standing, will be invited to rock the night away. The line up includes music from Morandi, Bryan Adams, Boney M, Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, Robbie Williams, Tom Jones, Neil Diamond and Queen amongst others. It also includes Ivan Grech, frontman, and Melvin Caruana, guitarist, from Winter Moods and Deborah C who shall be performing live with the band. The show is to be hosted by TV personality Angie Laus.
“Leone Goes Pop, will get underway at 9pm in Independence Square (it-Tokk), Victoria and is being produced in collaboration with the Victoria Local Council on the occasion of Victoria City Day, with the kind assistance of Citadel Insurance, Cisk, MTA, Ministry for Gozo and Ministry for Justice, Dialogue and the Family. Seating is free on a first-come-first-served basis, the band concluded.
