A 24 hour – 7 day a week watch has been set up near the turtle nesting site at Gnejna Bay. An emergency core team has been set up by MEPA as the coordinator.
Officials of the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs, the Mgarr Local Council, San Lucjan Centre, Police and Nature Trust (Malta) are the other stakeholders on this core team.
The site supervision is being carried out through a shared schedule with MRRA Security Office, MEPA Inspectors and Nature Trust (Malta). Gnejna Bay has been declared an Emergency Conservation Area (ECA) after the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) issued an Emergency Conservation Order (G.N.683/12), to ensure that the maximum protection is rendered to the site where a marine turtle laid a number of eggs on Wednesday.
Following a call for vlounteers issued a few days ago by Nature Trust (malta), over a 100 volunteers had registered to monitor the nesting site in less than 36 hours.
Nature Trust (Malta) would like to thank all for their support. In the coming days the NGO will also be giving out educational information on turtles to people who visit the site
