The University of Malta has said in a statement that at a meeting of the University Senate held last Thursday, it was agreed that, with effect from the September 2012 examination session, each year candidates from sixth forms and private candidates will be allowed to sit for as many subjects of the Matriculation Certificate (at Intermediate and Advanced Levels) as they wish in the May session and, due to time-table constraints, as many of the following examinations in the September session:

Any one subject at Advanced level; and

Any one subject from Group 1 at Intermediate level; and

Any one subject from Group 2 at Intermediate level; and

Any one subject from Group 3 at Intermediate level; and

Any one subject from Group 4 at Intermediate level; and

Systems of Knowledge.

All candidates will be allowed to obtain the Matriculation Certificate within a period of five years, i.e. when such candidates accumulate sufficient points in six subjects at levels and within the groups specified in the Matriculation Certificate Examination Regulations (http://www.um.edu.mt/matsec/regulations), they will be awarded the Matriculation Certificate.

This provision will be implemented as from the forthcoming September examination session. In effect, this means that all candidates who sat for Advanced and Intermediate Level examinations from 2008 onwards have the opportunity to sit for examinations as indicated above this September and qualify for the Matriculation Certificate.

Senate also agreed that the September Session of the Matriculation Certificate Examination will no longer be considered as a Supplementary Session. Therefore, candidates need not register for the May session of examinations in order to be allowed to sit for Matriculation Certificate examinations in September.
