The former Prime Minister, Dom Mintoff, 95, was admitted to Mater Dei Hospital late this afternoon, where he is receiving treatment in the Intensive Therapy Unit.
The former Labour Leader was also admitted to hospital in February this year when he underwent nine days of intensive in-patient care for a severe chest infection and congestive heart failure.
Mr Mintoff became the leader of the Malta Labour Party in 1949. He was Prime Minister during the period 1955-58. He resigned office in 1958 to lead the Maltese Liberation Movement. Mr Mintoff was again elected in the General Elections in 1962 and 1966. He served as Leader of the Opposition during 1962-71.
Mr Mintoff became Prime Minister for a second term in June 1971 and yet again following the General Elections in September, 1976 and in December, 1981. In September 1983, he was assigned also the office of Minister of the Interior.
On 22nd December 1984, Mr Mintoff voluntarily left office to enable his successor, Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici, to take overto take over.
Mr Mintoff is in my prayers every day ,because he did good things for Malta .and for Gozo ,And i also Admired him a lot, for his Courage that he had to fight for our BeLOVED ISLAND MALTA . Dom Mintoff did the best he could, to help the Maltese and Gozitans become Indepentent ,When we were under England , We had no Jobs in Malta and we had to leave the Island ,for other countries ,so we can find Work . Dom Mintoff Stopped that , after the British went out of Malta . he wanted to create work for all Maltese and Gozitans at our HOME Malta . He did not liked to see Malta SONS leaving Malta looking for Work , so he did what he wanted to do , Create WORK for ALL Workers of Malta .
Some Nations Ignored him ,and did not want to LOAN him Money ,Because he was Labour Leader . Good thing that Libya Helped him, to get on his Feet . From there on He got Malta out of the Hole , and work started to show up in Malta . He did a lot of good things for the Maltese ,although the young people of to day , forgot all about it . And propable they do not even read about Mr Mintoff History .. I agree with J . GRIMA Comment , Mintoff was our Second Father ,Because he Brought in LIGHT for Malta , from Darkness . . .
