The Gozo University Group recently organised a debate with the theme ‘The Governance of Gozo,’ where three speakers were invited for the debate which was chaired by Ryan Mercieca, President of GUG. The three spokesmen were Dr. Grezzju Mercieca, Mr. Franco Masini and Rev Dr. Joseph Bezzina.

Mr Franco Masini was the first to have the floor in this debate and he mentioned the importance of Gozo to be governed by a Regional Council to complement the Minister for Gozo.

Rev. Dr. Joseph Bezzina which had the second say in this debate, mentioned the past of the island of Gozo. Some of the instances mentioned were when Malta was under fedudalsim and Gozo had its own indipendent Government.

Rev Bezzina encouraged all the Gozitan students (which are the future of Gozo) not to give up and that he believes if it was done in the past (Gozo being ruled by Gozitans) it could also be done in the near future.

Mr. Mercieca suggested that a Regional Council, where both parties presently do agree and which is also acknowledged by the European Union, but do not specify how, but he believes that it is the key for a brighter future.

One of the Gozitan students present, Marc Schembri rebated and asked the spokesmen what are the tools needed to build a Regional Council that could solve the problems faced by the Gozitan population.

Present at this meeting was Mr. Anton Tabone, who mentioned the importance of giving Gozo a “regional status.”
