Producer and input prices for agricultural output rise in Q3During the third quarter, producer and input prices for agricultural output advanced by 8.8 and 7.3 per cent respectively when compared to the comparative period last year, the National Statistics Office said today.

The producer price index for agricultural products increased by 8.8 per cent, from 111.53 points in the third quarter of 2011 to 121.36 points in the corresponding quarter this year.

An increase of 5.1 per cent was registered in the prices of fresh vegetables, resulting from a general drop in the supply in the third quarter. This decline brought about higher producer prices for tomatoes (+20.1 per cent), sugar melons (+18.0 per cent) and onions (+8.7 per cent).

Similarly, the price of potatoes rose by 60.7 per cent over the comparative quarter, as a result of a decline in the supply of this crop. In contrast, the price of mushrooms and water melons decreased by 6.9 and 5.0 per cent respectively over the comparative quarter last year.

During the period under review, the fruit price index went down 4.9 per cent. This was mainly due to a decrease in prices fetched for grapes (-18.1 per cent).

The animal slaughtering index went up by 5.5 per cent over the comparative period, as higher prices were registered for pigs (+13.0 per cent) and rabbits (+2.2 per cent). Similarly, the animal products index rose by 11.8 per cent on account of higher producer prices fetched for eggs (+31.5 per cent) and milk (+4.0 per cent).

In the third quarter this year, the input price index for agriculture advanced by 7.3 per cent to 150.09 points.

The goods and services index, which registers running costs movements, rose by 7.6 per cent over the comparative period last year. This was mainly attributed to higher prices of animal feeding stuffs (+12.4 per cent) and motor fuels (+4.0 per cent). In contrast, a decline of 4.7 per cent was registered in the prices of veterinary services.

The machinery and investment index went up by 2.3 per cent on account of higher prices paid for materials (+3.2 per cent) and buildings (+1.4 per cent) over the corresponding period last year ?
