Rather ironically, given the events of the last two days, Franco Debono, MP and Anthony Agius Decelis, MP have recently participated at the interparliamentary meeting on transport and sustainable development organised by the economic affairs committees of the French National Assembly and the Senate. The meeting that was held in Paris on the 10th July was presided over by Mr Patrick Ollier, President of the National Assembly Economic Affairs Committee and by Mr Jean-Paul Emorine, President of the Senate Economic Affairs Committee.

The themes which were discussed during the meeting included the role of public transport which must be a more reliable and credible service to individual transport, whether to prioritise the development of new fuels e.g. hydrogen, biofuels, or continue promoting efforts towards cleaner vehicles, and rail or waterway freight as alternatives to ‘road only’ freight. Participants also discussed the proposals and actions taken by the European Union in the sphere of transport and sustainable development.

In conclusion, the meeting resolved to create a permanent Interparliamentary Sustainable Development Group composed of the parliamentary committees responsible for these matters, and more particularly, the delegations designated for this purpose. It was proposed that the group should meet not more than once every six months.
