The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association (MHRA) extended its congratulations to the PL and Dr Joseph Muscat for the success achieved in the General Elections.
MHRA President Tony Zahra stated that “Prime Minister Dr Joseph Muscat did an excellent job in steering his Party to success and accordingly augurs that together with his new Cabinet he will likewise manage to continue building on the success achieved to-date in the tourism industry.”
Mr Zahra stated that “over the past years success in the Tourism Industry has been the result of a team effort and accordingly this must continue to be the way forward.” He continued, “MHRA is very confident that this year, notwithstanding the great international challenges around us, will be yet another record year for the Tourism Industry, however this does not mean that all is plain sailing. Indeed there are various challenges which are critical and need further efforts to ensure sustainable economic growth through productive job creation.”
“MHRA’s main thrust during this important year revolves around the principle that Government must be the support for the engine of the economy, and not the engine itself lf. In this light MHRA augurs the new Government to concentrate efforts on the Tourism Industry by addressing issues related to accessibility especially in the winter and shoulder months and industry sustainability which also includes a reduction in the price of energy which has been promised and a reduction of the VAT rate from the hiked up 7 per cent down to the original 5 per cent,” Mr Zahra said
MHRA President stated that “the tourism industry represents 30 per cent of GDP and 35 per cent of Government income. It is an industry which employs over 35,000 people and percolates the income through many strata of the population. Success of the tourism industry is linked directly to success of Malta in the economic sphere.”
