The Chinese Ambassador to Malta H.E. Mr. Cai Jinbiao and his wife Madame Wang Jianqun travelled to Gozo on Saturday where he paid a courtesy visit to the Minister for Gozo, Dr Anton Refalo.
The two sides exchanged views on how to further strengthen relations between China and Gozo.
The Ambassador said that though China and Gozo were far away from each other, they shared many things in common such as rich history and culture and being genuine with friends.
“China hoped to develop stronger ties with the second largest island of Malta and the two sides could work together to further tap the potential for cooperation in such areas as tourism, education, agriculture and people-to-people exchanges.”
Dr Refalo briefed the Ambassador on the plans for Gozo’s future development and expressed the hope that more practical and mutually beneficial cooperation could be established between Gozo and China.
The Gozo Minister also discussed with the Ambassador the possibilities of bringing more Chinese tourists to Gozo as well as intensifying cultural and educational exchanges between the two sides.
The Chinese Ambassador during his visit on Saturday, also jointly inaugurated an exhibition on Chinese reed painting at the Ministry for Gozo with the Gozo Minister.
The exhibition consisted of 50 pieces of Chinese reed painting art works provided by the China Cultural Centre in Valletta, where the exhibition had been on display for a month.
Addressing the audience before the exhibition, Ambassador Cai underlined the importance of cultural and people-to-people exchanges to the overall bilateral relationship between China and Malta as well as China and Gozo.
He urged that more such events be held to further increase mutual understanding and friendship. Touching on the meeting he had with the Minister for Gozo prior to the exhibition, the Ambassador said that both sides agreed to intensify cooperation in areas such as education, tourism and environmental protection etc.
Dr Refalo welcomed the Ambassador and his wife on their visit Gozo and on the inauguration of the exhibition on Chinese art.
He said that Malta and Gozo took pride in the fact that Malta was one of the first countries in Europe to establish diplomatic relations with China. Dr Refalo said that the new Government will continue to seek stronger ties with China in various fields to the mutual benefits of both peoples.
The Minister for Gozo concluded by wishing every success for the exhibition, saying that he hoped that there would be many more similar bilateral cultural events in the future which he believed would serve to bring the two countries and peoples closer.
Nothing is never too far nor out of reach for the Chinese. Ask the Autralians and the New Zelanders or the Parisians (they’ve taken over entire areas of Paris) and they’re all over Africa.
And why would Maltese and Gozitan people need the Republic of China’s help to develop tourism, education, agriculture, culture and so forth?
To the benefit of both countries. Yeh Right!!!!
P.S. Still hoping to get their hands on that ludicrous yet lucrative (for some) projet of a link between Malta and Gozo?
