Gozo students favour fast boat service over permanent linkThe Gozo University Group (GUG) has conducted a survey regarding the permanent link between Malta and Gozo and it said that the results correspond with the results of other recent surveys.

In the survey the majority of Gozitan University students preferred the amelioration of the current means of transport between the two islands rather than a permanent link.

The GUG added that it would also like to take the opportunity to advance its ongoing support for the fast boat service between Mgarr (Gozo) and Sa Maison.

This link would provide quicker access to Malta not only for students but also for people who work in the area and for those who visit patients at Mater Dei as well as other commuters.

Maybe they’ve had the chance to think about it and realise that (a) it’s not feasible, (b) it would be environmentally damaging, (c) it would ruin Gozo’s tourist trade, (d) the tolls would be outrageous, (e) it wouldn’t significantly improve journey times to Valletta and (f) there are better alternatives.

I am sorry, but I can never understand why there is not a regular Gozo Ferry which travels to Sa Maison at 06.00 hours and returns at 09.00 to Gozo bringing the heavy lorries back, Monday to Friday weather permitting.
Also I don’t see much point of sending it out at 11.00am as is the case now. My understanding is the students prefer to stay in Malta during the week so thats not really a problem. and I am sure the other workers could return of a evening via the bus service or there cars.
When you think how many passengers a ferry takes (900) and 160 cars thats a lot of traffic off the roads. maybe woth thinking about.

This is very simple really, there is nothing wrong with Gozo Channel or it’s ferries. As other people said the problems start once you touch down in Malta. Whether you use the bus or your own car you are going to crawl all the way to work, and no bridge or tunnel is going to change that. Somebody said we should have a train underground system. Forget it !!! I worked for London Underground for 40 years, Did anybody know that in the late 18 hundreds when the London Underground system was being built, they calculated it cost 11,000 pounds per square yard. I shudder to thing what the cost will be today. The best solution and the cheapest is a Hydrofoil fast ferry (Passenger Only). It will take the workers to Malta in the morning stopping at Bugibba, Sliema and Valletta. It will return with the day tourists departing at 0900 hrs picking from the same places. In the afternoon, it will go back and pick the same workers and return them home. Then at 4.30 or 0500pm will take the tourists back. Simple really. It would be ideal if it stays at Valletta and collect the arriving tourists that arrive late at night with those flights and bring them to Gozo.
