The new Sexual Health Website was launched yesterday evening by the Minister for Health, Dr. Godfrey Farrugia during an activity to engage all the relevant stakeholders to promote sexual health well being.

The new website (www.sexualhealth.gov.mt) contains extensive information about the sexual health matters and is being offered for different target groups. Dr Farrugia encouraged the use of this website and applauded all present for a joint effort in order to tackle the rising problem of HIV globally.

He also emphasised the need for a wide holistic view to sexual health and the commitment of the Ministry for Health to implement the sexual health strategy.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared World AIDS Day on the 1st December in an effort to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS. World AIDS Day aims to raise awareness in the community about issues surrounding HIV and the continued need to prevent the spread of HIV through means such as safer sex practices and to support, understand and not discriminate against people living with HIV/AIDS.

According to UNAIDS every minute a woman is newly infected with HIV. Women are usually disadvantaged when it comes to negotiating safer sex practices and have limited access to HIV prevention information and services.

This year the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Directorate, within the Ministry for Health is targeting women with an assertive slogan ‘My Body My Rules’ to empower women with the knowledge and communication skills to protect themselves against HIV/AIDS and Sexually Acquired Infections.
