Alternattiva Demokratika said today that it is supporting the Coalition to Abolish Spring Hunting in its final push for more signatures to the referendum petition.
Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson, Prof. Arnold Cassola, said, “the abrogative referendum is the only democratic tool available to civil society for direct participation in decisions. In the EU the right to a citizens’ initiative is entrenched and legally binding in the Lisbon Treaty which Malta has signed and ratified.”
“In Malta, instead, the Hunters’ Federation now want to remove this only tool of direct democracy to suit their own egoistic needs. Let us respond to this threat to democratic expression by collecting even more signatures in favour of a referendum to abolish hunting in Spring,” Prof Cassola concluded.
