Update Readers Letter – “Gozo-Greyhounds hiked from Xatt L’Ahmar to Dwejra few weeks ago and these photographs were taken by some of the hikers, who were shocked by the amount of garbage and debris we saw on the hike.
Several people who are residents of Gozo, but are originally from somewhere else, have told me they are worried to hike because of harassment by local people that they have encountered.We need to work together here and take care of the land, cleaning it and making sure that families, kids, tourists and everyone has access to footpaths so they can enjoy this beautiful island.
I want to start 2014 with collaborative clean-up hikes with local NGOs, local councils and schools. Let’s work for a more beautiful and healthy Gozo in 2014!”
Update: “In response to this letter Mr David Camilleri, of the Green Party in Gozo called me and asked if Gozo-Greyhounds can get some kids for Friday 3rd to hike and clean up one of the places. He will be with us as well.
So tomorrow I will be hiking from Qala to Imgarr and Imgarr to Xatt L’Ahmar. I was a bit amazed that for this letter someone called and ask if they can help to start a clean up. I am going to start to do few hikes for clean in Gozo.”

Louis, I totally agree with all your comments. I am working with Nature Trust Malta on various projects and if you let me know the best way to contact you I can put you in touch with them and together with NTM other NGOs and some companies who want to do some community work we can start to clean up this beautiful island.
Hello Mr Brightside, You can call me at 99609845 or email me. sorry to say that I can’t wait for more months, weeks or days. 2013 I have walked on this path 6 times and 3 time the enter Gozo and the material are still there and its a shame. Local Councils should try to be involve to keep places clean where Families, kids, Tourists that hikes or walks in the country side. i am asking all the youths in Gozo to get up and help out and do the something for your Country. Please people keep our land clean. I thank all the Farmers for keeping our county so amazing and pretty from your hard work.
I am not Maltese or Gozitan, but have lived in Malta for just over two years. I am constantly amazed by the attitude of some locals to the the environment. Only today, I was driving along the coast road at Salina and the traffic came to a halt. Then I realised that there was a man in the road picking up a large plastic bag that had blown out of the back of his pickup (un-restrained load, surprise, surprise, but that is another story!!)
To my astonishment, instead of putting the bag back in his truck he calmly chucked it into the verge, behind the armco railing.
Another time, I witnessed (from a distance sadly) a guy drive up to the small bay at Xemxija, where the Chef restaurant is, open his boot and throw a couple of oil cans down onto the beech and drive off!!
In both cases, I cannot say 100% that the people were Maltese, but they certainly looked Maltese. These are not isolated incidents, but being an expat ( an outsider!) I am loath to say anything for fear of the response I will get.
It makes me both sad and angry that people treat the island like this. What was once were beautiful unspoilt islands are rapidly turning into rubbish strewn building sites. 🙁
Well said I agree 100 0/0 kids at the school need to be educated more where they disposed the rubbish bin it or take it home
Wherever one looks in the countryside there is fly tipped trash, trash and to more trash and so many discarded plastic bottles it defies the imagination. Only yesterday I was walking by the cab rank in Victoria and I watched a young man sitting on a bench just drop his takeaway rubbish next to the bench and walk off with his woman friend. A bin was just 15 feet away. Clearly these people have absolutely NO shame. It is so sad because this is an island these idiots should be proud of. There is a duck pond on the West side of the island that I regularly visit and each time I remove rubble bags of trash left behind by picnickers and fly tippers. Where is the education?
Thank you, its to bad that the locals don’t seem to care about the environment the way non native do. I wonder if Maltese or Gozozitian people on vacation in other country what would they do when it come if they have something in there hands. Would they throw away o the floor or keep it until they see a garbage bin.

I walk my dog on Marfa Ridge and there is so much rubbish dumped up there. Similar to you George, I have seen people sitting in their cars admiring the view and then open their window, toss out paper cups or take away boxes and then drive off.
It’s the same at all the picnic sites, which the Maltese use regularly during the summer – rubbish left from their picnics. The thing is, they go back there next week and sit amongst all the rubbish and don’t seem bothered.

What I notice that groups of people come from Malta for a day to enjoy and when they leave behind lot of litter …….who organize this trips need to make sure they clean before they leave .”……….keep Gozo clean ……..bin it or take it home …..thank you
It disgusts me the amount of litter i see in and around Gozo. It saddens me too, that it isnt the tourists that do this, it is infact the Gozitans themselves.
Just this evenning, i witnessed a police officer on duty in Mgarr deliberatly throw his empty packet of cigarettes into the sea. he then followed it with another peice of litter, i thought was a lighter that had stopped working.
It sickens me that there is no respect for such a beautiful island, I do not want it to become another typicall island in the med, Gozo should be preserved and not developed in the way that “everywhere else” has become.
I have been living here a year and already im giving up hope of it becoming the paradise i once saw it to be.
Over where we live if some one drop any litter on floor he get find £60 pounds or some places camres watching you and give you waning to pick it up or find
