Take politics out of selection process for new President, says Mallia

In a rather bold move, PN MEP candidate and EU affairs spokesman Stefano Mallia, recently aired his views on the choice of the next President of Malta through a social media post. Mr Mallia said that he felt “there was no need to make the selection process for the next President a political one.”

In his view “there were enough suitable candidates who don’t have a particular political affiliation and who could represent our county in the best way possible.”

Mallia said ‘For a change, why can’t we appoint somebody who has never been directly involved in politics. I’m sure there are a number of candidates that would do us proud just like the previous ones have done us very proud. This way we can do away with this grievance about whether the next President should be a PN or PL appointee.”

According to Mallia, by going down this route it would also give the chosen individual a much greater freedom to develop and fulfill the role of the President.

Mr Mallia said his position “is in contrast to the one taken by the PN, who are vying for a person to be chosen from the Opposition rather than the Government.”

Mr Stefano Mallia is contesting the upcoming MEP elections.

I am amazed that the person appointed to the office of President is not elected by the people.

      • Peter says:

Mr Cundy is the Queen been elected by the people’s vote ???

      • Mick Cundy says:

What has that do with this? The Queen of where? Malta is a Republic, not a Monarchy. Your question is irrelevant. And, why ask me?

      • Peter says:

Mr Cundy the President of Malta is chosen more democratically every five years than the way monarchs are chosen where the same members of the same family inherit their throne.

      • Mick Cundy says:

That is the difference between a Monarchy and a Republic. As such they cannot be compared.

    3. Mick Cundy says:

I am thinking that if the President holds no political power (obviously has influence) then perhaps a nationally recognised and acclaimed individual would be better in post to promote the Republic’s profile etc. Voted in of course by the people.
