Ta’ Mena Estate said it is proud to announce that the Estate has been presented with the 2013 Entrepreneurship Award by the Gozo Tourism Association.
The Estate said that it won the award “for being innovative and authentic in the tourism sector, producing genuine Gozitan food products and wines while giving a real rural gozitan experience to those who visit our estate.”
The award was presented during a ceremony organised by the Gozo Tourism Association, by the Minister for Gozo, Dr Anton Refalo, to the Ta’ Mena Estate Managing Director Joseph Spiteri.
Ta’ Mena Estate is owned by the Spiteri family namely Joseph, Margaret, Philip, Mark and Patrick together with their father Frank.
The estate was founded by their late mother Carmela, popularly known as Mena, who worked hard to purchase and cultivate the land until her pre-mature death in 1986, when the project was partially shelved.
The Spiteri Family said that in 2002 they decided to start again to regenerate the 25 hectares of agricultural land which used to be a fruit and vegetable garden, to realise their late mother’s dream of integrating agriculture with tourism so that one sector sustains the other. “After seven years of very intensive planning and hard work, this project is taking shape and should be fully finished in the next two years.”
“The strategy behind this project is to offer a product with a difference to our clients. We think that too many entities are selling the same product which consists only of the sun, sea and comfort. At Ta’ Mena Estate we want to offer more of what is unique to Gozo with its history, folklore and culture,” the Spiteri Family said.
“We want our guests to go around and be taught about crops, trees and food processing in the traditional way. We want to provide a health farm and an educational experience to young children, adolescents and adults. Agri- tourism is definitely the new type of holiday that is flourishing everywhere,” the Spiteri Family concluded.
