In reply to the statement issued from the DOI on behalf of Parliamentary Secretary for Research, Innovation, Youth and Sport, Stefan Buontempo, the Gozo University Group, has said that it would like to state that they never said that they had a meeting with Parliamentary Secretary Stefan Buontemp and therefore demand an apology.

“In fact,” GUG said, “Parliamentary Secretary Stefan Buontemp had a meeting with another entity and stated that having an indoor swimming pool in Gozo is not viable, GUG therefore felt the need to express its disappointment with such comments as the organisations concerns are not only about the Gozitan students but also about the policies for Gozo.”

GUG added that it is also waiting for a reply from Parliamentary Secretary Stefan Buontemp about the request for a meeting which was sent in July 2013 and another one which was sent this week questioning why he is refusing to meet.

Furthermore, GUG said that it would like to state that “in November 2012 in Parliament it was published that tenders were awarded for such a project, and that the indoor swimming pool would be ready in 2014 with an investment of € 6.2 million.”

GUG added that the pool would be used among others by members of waterpolo clubs, football clubs, the Division of Education, the Gozo Sports Complex, patients of the Gozo General Hospital, as well as groups that promote physical exercise. It was also argued that part of the pool was to be reserved to meet the needs of the elderly and disabled together with the possibility of having a tourism niche for Gozo.

GUG concluded by saying that all this not only makes the project viable but also shows that there is a great need for such a project.
