Ferry suspensions leave Gozo isolated for most of Sunday - GBC & GTAThe Gozo Business Chamber and the Gozo Tourism Association, in a joint statement today said that “due to the prevailing rough seas, the Gozo Channel had to cancel a considerable number of trips on Sunday 2nd February, 2014. Because of this Gozo was left isolated for the good part of Sunday, resulting in a large number of passengers stranded in Malta and Gozo.”

The GBC and the GTA added, “among those stranded in Gozo, were people who wanted to catch flights and others who needed medical treatment. These had to make use of a small launch and faced great difficulties to disembark at Cirkewwa due to the rough seas.”

“While acknowledging that Gozo Channel could do nothing in such circumstances, we feel that such a situation, whereby Gozo was completely isolated, is not acceptable and highlights the need of improvement in the short and long term connectivity between both islands,” the GBC and the GTA concluded.

As someone who regularly used the Dartford Bridge in the UK and suffered the delays when it regularly closed in high winds hope that the proposers of a bridge to Gozo don’t think that the bridge will be open all weathers because it won’t!

Mr. Brightside is right. A bridge between Malta and Gozo will not solve the problem. Bridges are shut down because of high winds all over the world. Read about one such instance below. For once in a blue moon, an “Emergency Helicopter Evacuation Program” may better serve the public and is less costly.

The Mackinac Bridge Authority tells 9&10 News the Bridge has been reopened.
It was shut down Thursday night after a semi truck was tipped over by strong winds.
The semi blew over on the northbound side of the bridge.
Strong winds blew through the Straits Area at more than 65 miles per hour.”

Sorry GBC and GTA, its the price you have to pay for living on a beautiful island.
thankfully these occurrences are very rare, and whilst i feel sorry for anyone who missed their flight from Malta, isn’t that why we have travel insurance ?
