The ‘Gozo-Rocks-Green & Clean Hike’ on Sunday afternoon started off from the Heliport Road with another eager team of volunteers ready for the dean-up ahead.
Organiser, Louis Debattista said “the photographs express better than words can of the situation here. Our island needs so much attention. On Sunday, the weather was perfect, but the streets were a disaster. We saw all kinds of people walking and enjoying the beautiful weather, but the amount of rubbish was incredible.”
Louis added, “I was on the Qala coast road today, where we cleaned two weeks ago and already there is new litter.”
“We really need ‘no littering/dumping signs’ put up around the island, with fines and enforcement. Louis stated that “People park their cars to eat and enjoy the view, and when they finish eating they throw their rubbish and leftovers on the ground rather than take it home in the car to throw it away. Come on!”
“The kids were working very hard yesterday! They really did a super job. One kind man came out of his house and gave chocolates to all the kids. He lived in New York City for years and said he really appreciated what we’re doing,” Louis said.
A family that regularly attends the Sunday hikes wrote, “another beautiful day to do a Gozo Rocks Green & Clean Hike! Although the amount of trash we picked up was staggering…almost an impossible task to complete. So sad!
“Glad we had so many hands on deck to do the best we could AND we got to take a “break” with a lovely hike through some beautiful countrysides. Thanks to our never tiring leader Gozo-Greyhounds Louis for always showing us the way!”

Well done guys it’s a shame the kids have to pick up all the adult mess! I can not understand why people who love gozo leave and dump rubbish all over the place.the dump is only 5 mins away.as I always say someone knows who dumps rubbish please report them so an example can be made of them to pick up litter For 100 hours.
Thank you whats done is done its hard to look back but time to move forward. Its work for everyone but we are enjoying the country side as well. What I wish is that Local Councils or Government put up signs with Fines for anyone Adults or Kids so this way families or Adults stop trashing. I was driving in Ghajnsielem 2 boys one of them had a plastic bottle. He was done and then he throws it in the street. Why, I was about to stop and pick up that bottle and take it where he lives and give it to his parents and explain why I was there, but my wife stopped me. I am asking the Minister or Eco Gozo to come up with signs & fines about trashing the streets or country side. We need to start and act now if we are going to get more Tourist in our Island. Let focus by investing on our island as well how to keep it free of trash.
