The Valparaiso University Chamber Concert Band are to perform at St. Peter & St. Paul Square, Nadur, as part of the 2014 Carnival celebrations

Valparaiso University, in Indiana, USA has been training musicians to become performers, teachers, and scholars for more than a century. Music majors at Valpo engage in an intellectually and musically challenging course of study that combines the best of liberal and professional education. All music major options offer comprehensive preparation in musicianship, history, theory, performance skills, and repertoire, provided by dedicated musician-professors.

The Valparaiso University Chamber Concert Band is directed by Jeffrey Scott Doebler, Director of Music Education and Bands, and 2005 recipient of the alumni association’s Distinguished Teaching Award. Playing the finest in concert band music with a focus on original compositions, the band has toured the U.S. and Canada, playing venues such as Cleveland’s Severance Hall and Chicago’s Orchestra Hall.

The Chamber Concert Band (CCB) is the premier concert band of three bands at Valparaiso University. Members include students studying a wide range of disciplines from all the Universities Colleges are encouraged to audition for membership.

A principal player is named for each section; however, band members rotate roles to allow everyone to play both melody and harmony during each performance. Every musician in the CCB is an integral member. Repertoire includes the finest in concert band music, with a special focus on original band compositions.

Their third tour to Malta, is taking place between the 2nd and 9th of March 2014. The band’s repertoire will vary during the tour. They will honour the victims of the Newtown, CT tragedy with “An American Elegy” by Frank Ticheli, originally commissioned to honour the victims at Columbine High School, and will perform works from films such as Ben Hur, The Patriot, Harry Potter and The Incredibles. Their March 2nd on-campus concert with the Windiana Concert Band will feature Johan de Meij’s Symphony No. 1: The Lord of the Rings as part of the University’s conference on J.R.R. Tolkein.

In recent years, Valparaiso ensembles have performed across the nation at notable venues including Symphony Center in Chicago, Severance Hall in Cleveland and Carnegie Hall in New York. Regional, national and international tours are part of the regular performing cycle for the select ensembles. Closer to home, jazz ensemble students play regular off-campus gigs at a local restaurant and in Chicago.

The performance by the Valparaiso University Chamber Concert Band, is taking place on Tuesday, the 4th of March starting at 9.30pm.
