Former Prime Minister Alfred Sant declared that should he be elected in the May European Parliament elections he wishes to participate in the repositioning of Malta’s stance in the EU.

Alfred Sant was speaking after submitting his nomination for the European Parliament elections at the Electoral Commission buildings in Valletta.

Sant said he favours “a more activist approach in the defence of Malta’s interests. This will have to be done through efforts that seek to maximise the benefits that Malta can gain from EU membership while distributing them more fairly among the local population.”

Equally, Sant said he believes that “our efforts should focus on minimising the burdens and spreading them too more fairly. Malta’s aspirations in Europe will need to be gauged continually alongside ongoing pan-European developments. Maltese initiatives cannot be carried out in isolation from such developments..

Dr Sant added that, “in the coming years pressures are bound to increase for greater central control over decision making by national governments. Federalisation of Europe is not necessarily in the interests of Malta.”

“I have repeatedly stated that Europe is a continent of nations, and this defines Europe’s essential character. In such a context, it will remain important for Malta to contest all one-size-fits-all policies which have already during the past ten years served Malta’s interests very badly,” Dr Sant concluded.
