The Parliamentary Secretary for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Active Ageing Dr Justyne Caruana, has attended a ‘Sports Day for the Elderly’ activity.

Around 600 elderly people from various Day Centres around Malta attended the event, as well as 400 children from schools in the area.

In her address, Dr Justyne Caruana said it that it was a pleasure to attend the event, which, she said, is a great example of the elderly being involved in ‘Active Ageing.’ This sort of activity is just what the Secretariat is working towards.

She said the concept of Active Ageing is that the elderly can still make a “valuable and important contribution to our society.”

Dr Caruana said “it’s time that the elderly are no longer seen as a burden on society, but rather as someone who still has a substantial contribution to give in every area and level of society.”

“I can also see that school children have attended the event, and although young, you also have your own potential and abilities, just as the older generation still have theirs,” said the Parliamentary Secretary.

She also mentioned that physical activity is important and fun to take part in and encouraged the elderly who attended to continue to participate in these activities.

Dr Caruana presented mementos and cups to the winners and participants.
