The Cinema Digitisation Scheme was introduced in the 2014 Budget with the aim of facilitating the digital transition of cinemas in Malta and Gozo by supporting part of the costs linked to the purchase of a digital projector and related equipment.

The scheme will help cinema exhibitors increase the circulation and viewership of European audiovisual works and will further encourage accessibility of audiovisual works to a wider public.

The Ministry for Justice, Culture and Local Government, through the Culture Directorate, in collaboration with the Creative Economy Working Group at the Ministry for Finance are responsible for the implementation of the Scheme.

By means of the first call, more than €340,000 of funding were approved, assisting 5 cinema exhibitors and 23 screens across Malta and Gozo.

In view of this success, the Ministry for Justice Culture and Local Government together with the Ministry for Finance are launching a second call for applications to ensure that all eligible cinemas benefit from this scheme and are able to install state-of-the-art digital projectors to enhance the cinematic experience of all cinema goers.

Applications are available from www.culture.gov.mt and are to be submitted by Friday 25th July 2014 at the Culture Directorate, Auberge d’Italie, Merchants Street, Valletta. For further information contact Nigel Micallef on 22915054.
