Gozitan students attend information meeting at the Gozo Ministry

The Minister for Gozo, Dr Anton Refalo met with students during an introductory meeting for those planning to further their studies at the University, MCAST or ITS in Malta in the coming academic year.

During the meeting, held at the Ministry for Gozo, Dr Refalo said that education is an essential part in the social development for everyone and therefore these years of education should be taken seriously. “The various careers and courses that that you students will be attending are essential for the social and economic development of our country.”

The Minister for Gozo said that he understands the problems Gozitan students face when they leave the family for the first time to live in Malta.

He wished every success to those students, “who in the future will be the professionals and workers who contribute to the development of our country.”

Dr Anton Refalo said that in education “we must always look ahead. The Government is committed to continue to invest strongly, so that students along with the teachers have the best possible methods to develop their potential.”

“The Ministry for Gozo is working in this regard for the benefit of Gozitan students to maximise the human potential in every person, The Minister said. “The Government is fully committed to further-strengthening the system of stipends and additional aids for Gozitan students, as well as accessibility and transport between the two islands and from Cirkewwa to Msida.”

The Minister for Gozo stressed that students to cherish the time in which they are studying and build new relationships within society.

Also present for the meeting were members of the Gozo University Group who announced that the findings of a survey about the Gozitan students’ Maintenance Grant, conducted by the group were accepted and will be implemented. These were presented to the Prime Minister Dr. Muscat and to the Minister for Gozo in July.

The GUG said that “with this achievement, as from next October the procedure of the Gozitan Student Maintenance Grant will be less bureaucratic and a more efficient one since the payment will be directly deposited in the students’ bank account.”

It added, “this shows the commitment of the GUG; of having the Gozitan interest at heart and that of making changes easier.”

The Group explained the necessary information for enrolment and advised the students of the various organisations within the different faculties and encouraged new students to get to know more about them during the activities of Freshers’ Week, which will be organised as the first semester begins.

They also spoke on specific aspects that affect the Gozitan students, in particular searching for accommodation in Malta and ferry crossings between the two islands, as well as the related expenses. The GUG through its website offers information on accommodation near the University where students can lodge, or share with other fellow students.
